Visit to a book fair

Book fairs have become a very interesting annual event in Calcutta nowadays. I would not have believed that a fair could be so fascination had I not visited the fair last year with my father. It was around 3 o'clock when we reached there. Inside, there were some hundred pavilions of different shapes and sizes. Nicely bound books on medicine, engineering, literature, general knowledge, fiction and other subjects were thrown open to public and how beautiful they looked in their smart covers ! Gradually, the whole area became crowded and queues in front of certain stalls lengthened. Business at all counters was usually brisk. Customers were happy to get ten per cent discount on cash purchases. Some publishing houses brought out famous and rare books on this occasion. Some stalls sold only juvenile literature both national and international. There was something for everybody to suit his pocket and taste. I had no idea that books have such a universal appeal to the general people. The whole atmosphere was joyous and people were moving freely. Indeed, it was altogether a different type of fair, and I enjoyed every moment of my visit there.
