Sound pollution

[Points: What it is - its sources - its effects - damages - need for awareness of sound pollution - effectively controlled - enforcement of penal measures.]

Sound pollution constitutes one of the worst forms of pollution hazards today. High pitched sound, continuous blaring or a sudden sheirking sound cause physiological and psychological damage and often lead to deafness, mental imbalance and even heart failure. In the animal life, noise pollution causes reduction of usable habitat that leads to upsetting the delicate balance and accelerating extinction. There are many factors causing sound pollution. Indiscriminate use of microphones, shrill electrical horns of motor vehicles, sounds emitted by trams, trains, plying vehicles, aeroplanes, various fireworks and slogan shouting-all contribute towards noise pollution. In fact, we are living in an age when the entire environment is surcharged with sound pollution. People should be conscious of the irreparable injuries sound pollution might cause. Noise should be effectively controlled by preventing indiscriminate use of loudspeakers, use of electric horns and high sounding fireworks. Technologies such as using noise barriers, limitation of vehicle speeds, quieter jet engines, etc., go a long way in mitigating sound pollution. However, awareness to the effects of sound pollution should be made a priority of any government in this industrial age and fast-paced society.
